The 150-year-old ban on selling liquor on Sundays in Minnesota was recently lifted, but the go-ahead for Sunday sales hasn't officially gone into effect yet (legally, it begins Sunday, July 2, FYI).
That didn't stop Jim Surdyk, president and owners of Surdyk's, the family-owned liquor store in Northeast Minneapolis, from opening his doors on Sunday, March 12. The StarTribune notes that Surdyk's issued a social media blast on Sunday morning alerting their customers that the store and it's adjoining cheese shop would be open.
However, Minneapolis licensing manager Grant Wilson wasn't too happy. He told the StarTribune that Surdyk was in violation of state law, in addition to the city ordinance. The licensing manager even showed up at the store to document sales so he could send the incident to the city attorney, which could result in an estimated $3,500 fine and even a liquor license suspension.
