Peanut the Rescue Dog Hailed As A Hero After Saving Young Girl's Life

Peanut, a previously abused shelter dog, is named a hero after she saved a three-year-old girl's life.

One of the dog's owners said Peanut started barking uncontrollably and frantically running around their home on Friday, Mar. 17. Since this was unusual behavior, the husband of the household let Peanut outside. The dog immediately ran into a field next to the owners' home, so the man followed her.

That's when Peanut led his owner to a three-year-old girl lying naked and cold in a ditch.

The man said he wrapped the young girl up in his sweatshirt, took her inside and called 911.

Last April, a Good Samaritan brought Peanut to an animal shelter in northern Michigan. She had two broken legs, and her previous owners were arrested for animal cruelty.

"As you know, her background was so heartbreaking and we are so happy that we were able to take her into our home and give her the love and  the family she deserves," the woman said in an interview with M-Live.

Police eventually found the girl's parents; however, they discovered the home was "unsafe and unsanitary." Child Protective Services took custody of the girl and her sister.
